Wearing designer clothes and accessories might make you appear uncooperative or unable to interact with others.
According to an analysis accomplished by University of Michigan academics, this is according to a survey. Previous studies have shown that wealthier people are more intelligent, disciplined, and so on, but the current research looks at people’s perceptions in a professional situation.
The team conducted six trials with over 2,800 individuals. In one study, 395 respondents were asked to determine if they felt people on social media were unselfish, cooperative, selfless, or giving based on various profiles.
The posts on the profiles were either impartial or showed off a high social position. According to the findings, the participants were less inclined to encourage a profile to join their group if they identified someone with high social standing.
These people were also richer, less concerned with others, and more focused on their position.
In another study, 1,345 people were instructed to believe they were making their social media profile and had to decide what to wear for their profile picture. They were informed that the profile was to be chosen for an online community.
However, only half of them were told that the organization sought ‘cooperative’ people. Labels like Gucci and Prada, standard brands, and unbranded clothing were among the clothing possibilities.
Participants attempting to portray themselves as cooperative team players were far less likely to choose from the premium brand group. Even individuals unaware of the ‘cooperative’ person’s need noticed this.
“This experiment reveals that individuals are alert to when the value of luxury brands flips from positive to negative,” said Dr. Shalena Srna, the study’s principal author. People are strategic not just about when to advertise their position, but also about their humility.”
“Posting about your pricey vacations and fancy items on Instagram or TikTok may help you persuade others, frighten competition, and win on the dating market – at least for guys,” she added. However, it may send the message to potential friends or employers that you are unconcerned about the needs of others. This is a tricky balancing act for those who want to impress others while simultaneously exhibiting their knowledge to work as a team.
