Sourav Ganguly, president of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), defended Rishabh Pant on Friday after the wicketkeeper-batsman tested positive for COVID-19 in England before India’s five-match Test series against the hosts.
On Thursday, the BCCI stated that Rishabh Pant was “asymptomatic” and “shall be free to rejoin the crew in Durham later returning two negative RT-PCR tests.” the BCCI said on Thursday that Pant and training assistant Dayanand Garani tested positive for the illness in England and will not go with the rest of the team to Durham for a three-day practice match.
According to the BCCI, Pant is “asymptomatic” and “shall be able to join the squad in Durham after returning two negative RT-PCR tests.” Garani has three additional intimate contacts: wicketkeeper Wriddhiman Saha, opener Abhimanyu Easwaran, and bowling coach B Arun. As a precaution, they have been ordered to remain in their rooms for ten days. In an interview with News18, Ganguly defended Pant, saying that it is “physically difficult to wear a mask all the time.”
“We just witnessed the European Championship and Wimbledon in England. The rules have shifted. They were on leave, and wearing a mask all the time is physically impossible,” he explained. Following the ICC World Test Championship final, the squad was given a 20-day break, during which Pant was sighted visiting Wembley Stadium in London during England’s UEFA Euro 2020 last-16 match against Germany.
When asked about opening possibilities in the absence of Shubman Gill, Ganguly stated, “I don’t get involved in all of these things.” The team’s management will decide this.”
