Google honored Naziha Salim, a painter, educator, and one of the most significant artists in Iraq’s contemporary art scene, with a Doodle homage on Saturday (April 23, 2022). The Barjeel Art Foundation featured Naziha’s work in their collection of female artists on this day in 2020.

Born in Turkey into a family of Iraqi painters, Salim has always enjoyed creating her art. She enrolled in the Baghdad Fine Arts Institute to study painting and graduated with honors. She was among the first women to be offered a scholarship to continue her education at the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris due to her hard work and passion for art. Salim excelled in fresco and mural painting in Paris. After graduation, she spent several years abroad, immersing herself in art and culture.
She eventually returned to Baghdad to teach at the Fine Arts Institute until her retirement. She was an active part of Iraq’s arts community and a founding member of Al-Ruwwad, a society of artists who study abroad and blend European art techniques into the Iraqi aesthetic. Salim also wrote the book Iraq: Contemporary Art, a valuable resource for the country’s early modern art movement.
Today’s Google Doodle also commemorates St. George, England’s patron saint, who is famed for traditions depicting him defeating a dragon to save a princess.
