Jim runs across Judy on his way to his first day at Dawson High and offers her a ride. She declines Jim’s offer, ostensibly unimpressed, and is instead picked up by her “mates,” a group of delinquents led by Buzz Gunderson. The rest of the student body shuns Jim, but he is embraced by Plato, who idolizes him as a father figure.
