Diwali is a holiday enjoyed all over the world that originated in India. It’s a harvest festival, but it’s also a religious holiday for Hindus, Jains, and Sikhs.

Diwali: individuals who do not practice any of the three religions celebrate Diwali in India and other parts of South Asia. It’s like Thanksgiving and New Year’s Eve rolled into one! Diwali is called the “Festival of Lights.” For a holiday, rows of lamps are lit inside and outside of homes and structures.

Think about how brilliant that must be! These lamps are known as Deepavali (pronounced “deep-a-valley”), from which the word Diwali derives. The lights line the streets and are even floated along rivers on small boats. Electric light displays and LEDs have now joined the ranks of classic tiny lamps. All of these lights symbolize the victory of light over darkness and the strength of good over evil.

In Hinduism, it is also a time to honor the gods and goddesses, particularly the goddess Lakshmi, who is said to enter your home if it is clean.

Diwali is celebrated by millions of people all over the world. To name a few, it is a national holiday in India, Pakistan, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Malaysia, Singapore, Trinidad & Tobago, Myanmar, and Fiji.

Fireworks and street celebrations are historically attended by tens of thousands of people in cities such as Melbourne, Australia, and Leicester, England! The year’s festivities will be a little different, allowing people to participate while also maintaining social distance. Families in India will clean their homes and buy new outfits.

Businesses close their books and prepare their finances for the next year. During the occasion, intricate designs known as rangoli are created on floors or the ground with colored rice or powder to bring good luck.

Families frequently pay visits to one another, giving gifts and sweets. This year, they may not physically visit each other, but they may do it virtually in order to maintain social distance.
