5 rising players to look out for in IPL 2022

From Tilak Verma to Ayush Badoni – Check out the top five emerging stars of IPL 2022

Besides the names of the teams who have had the opportunity to hold it, the Indian Premier League trophy also has a tagline engraved on it, saying – ‘Yatra Pratibha Avsara Prapnotihi’, which means ‘where talent meets opportunity.’

The engraving is not just there to add to the trophy’s glamour but it indeed is a proven fact, for this competition has unearthed many hidden gems and has nurtured them to become superstars. The likes of Jasprit Bumrah and Hardik Pandya can testify to it, and IPL 2022 has carried the tradition forward by giving opportunities to many unknown names.

Let’s check out five rising players to look out for in IPL 2022:

5. Marco Jansen (IPL 2022)

Marco Jansen has been consistent with the ball for Sunrisers Hyderabad

Marco Jansen might have played a few matches for South Africa already, but he still is only a 21-year-old youngster with immense potential. Not many expected him to start ahead of Romario Shepherd, who was bought for INR 7.75 crores by Sunrisers Hyderabad. However, the lad from Potchefstroom has utilized any and every opportunity that has come his way and has emerged as one of Hyderabad’s most prized assets.

The Protean speedster has picked up 6 wickets in 5 matches at an economy rate of only 7.15 runs per over and an equally impressive average of 23.83. Jansen’s best spell so far came in the match against Royal Challengers Bangalore, where he picked up a three-wicket haul which included the crucial wicket of Virat Kohli.

4. Maheesh Theekshana (IPL 2022)

Maheesh Theekshana has been one of Chennai Super Kings’ better bowlers

Maheesh Theekshana’s case is a lot similar to that of Jansen. He too has played a few matches for his nation, Sri Lanka, but is still an uncut 21-year-old gem with the ability to become a global superstar. The off-spinner has been one of the best bowlers from an underperforming Chennai Super Kings team.

The lad from Colombo has picked up 8 wickets in five matches, which has come at an average of 19.37 and an economy rate of 7.75 runs per over. Like Jansen, Theekshana’s best spell came against Royal Challengers Bangalore as well, but he picked up a four-wicket haul.

3. Abhishek Sharma (IPL 2022)

Abhishek Sharma has done well as an opener for Sunrisers Hyderabad

Not many were particularly impressed with Sunrisers Hyderabad’s decision of breaking their bank on youngster Abhishek Sharma, and the plan of making him the opener was not welcomed gladly either. However, the 21-year-old has done a fantastic job to silence the doubters and justify why his team rates him highly.

The all-rounder from Punjab has scored 220 runs in 7 matches at an average of 31.42 and a fairly decent strike rate of 125.71. His best knock came against Chennai Super Kings, where he smashed 75 runs to secure his team’s victory.

2. Ayush Badoni (IPL 2022)

Ayush Badoni has played a few crucial cameos for Lucknow Super Giants

The three previous mentions on this list are young and upcoming cricketers, but they were not unknown commodities before IPL 2022. However, hardly anyone would have heard the name of Lucknow Super Giants’ Ayush Badoni before this tournament, but he is now a topic of discussion in every household.

The 22-year-old from Delhi has not played many matches for his state as well and was scouted by Gautam Gambhir and Vijay Dahiya. He has scored 134 runs in 8 runs at an average of 26.80 and an impressive strike rate of 139.58. Badoni’s best performance was a knock of 54 runs, which came in Lucknow’s opening encounter against Gujarat Titans.

1. Tilak Verma (IPL 2022)

Tilak Verma has been Mumbai Indians’ lone glimmer of hope

In Rohit Sharma, Ishan Kishan and Suryakumar Yadav, Mumbai Indians have three of India’s most talented limited-overs batters in their ranks. Besides that, they also have overseas stars like Kieron Pollard and Dewald Brevis. However, at a time when every single player seems to be in the worst form of their life, Tilak Verma is the only positive the five-time champions can take from what has otherwise been a campaign to forget.

The 19-year-old youngster is his team’s leading run-scorer, having scored 272 runs in 8 matches at an average of 45.33 and a strike rate of 140.20. Verma has scored a couple of half-centuries, which has come against Rajasthan Royals and Chennai Super Kings.
