Physiotherapy in Covid-19

As we all are witnessing the ongoing pandemic, which is affecting the old adults and the youth of the country, the frontline workers aren't leaving any stone unturned during this pandemic.

As we all are witnessing the ongoing pandemic, which is affecting the old adults and the youth of the country, the frontline workers aren’t leaving any stone unturned during this pandemic.

Still, the crucial role physiotherapy has played undeniable. It has helped patients recover from the fatal disease and is seen as a boon in the coming years.

Dr. Pranoti Kangutkar, founder of Dr. Pranoti’s Physio lounge, Mumbai,

President of Women’s Wing (Maharashtra) for Global Association Of Physiotherapy said, “We have been treating a range of patients in the hospital, from geriatrics to young adults and now even kids, who have initially ignored the symptoms and later ended up with severity, the challenge comes up when the patient turns up with severe breathlessness. So it’s imperative to see your doctor when you experience covid 19 symptoms as avoiding them invites prolonged limitation in functional lung capacity, which ultimately hampers a person’s daily living activities”.

As in Covid 19 patients, the lower end of the lungs receives less air, hampers the lung’s cells, and affects its function better. So as per WHO’s guidelines, physiotherapy plays an essential role in the recovery of patients with covid 19 to increase oxygen level and improve lung functioning. Until now, lactating mothers had been scared of passing the disease to their newborns while breastfeeding. But vaccination has now brought a kind of relief to everyone. Even mothers who are lactating are now advised to get the vaccination as it will help pass on the antibodies against the covid 19 to their newborn through breast milk, she added.
Patients who have recovered from the illness are also equally needed to take care at home. If anyone feels breathless, can relieve it by adopting different sitting positions and leaning forward, by using deep breathing techniques using the diaphragm, also pursed-lip breathing that is inhaling through the nose and exhaling through your mouth, spirometer is of very much use for a speedy recovery but still consulting to the doctor is yet essential.
Dr. Pranoti, through her social media handles, Instagram & Youtube named “Dr. Physio Pizz,” has also explained how the covid scenario has changed the way of practice, as no frontline worker was initially used to the idea of using PPE kits while practicing in clinics.
