#WillSueMinYoongi: Why do BTS fans want to sue Suga on his birthday?

The intention to sue Min Yoongi, commonly known as Suga, stems from a 2014 fan signing session.

On Wednesday, the BTS fandom, known as ARMY, celebrated the birthday of Min Yoongi, a rapper in the massively popular South Korean boy band.

Interestingly, instead of sending him nice birthday wishes, supporters began using the hashtag #WillSueMinYoongi in their birthday tweets.

Other hashtags trending alongside #WillSueMinYoongi included #ForeverADangerousMan and #WillFileAComplaintTodayToo. Many people who were not familiar with the fanbase were perplexed by the odd choice of hashtags.

The beginnings of “suing” or “reporting” Yoongi, also known as Suga, may be traced back to a fan signing event conducted in Daejeon, South Korea, in 2014. During the event, a Suga fangirl said, “Min Yoongi, you dangerous man!” She then jokingly accused him of giving her a “hard time” because she was smitten by his charm. She later exclaimed, “I will sue you Min Yoongi,” much to the pleasure of BTS members and other fans, as Suga chuckled and struggled to hide his laughter.
The same fan was spotted again at another fan sign event, where she said, “I thought my heart exploded!” Min Yoongi, I will notify you.” “You claimed you were going to sue me, and now you’re threatening to report me,” Suga said this time.
Threats of “suing” or “reporting” Yoongi have since become a running gag in the fandom, with the phrase “I will sue you, Min Yoongi” becoming synonymous with expressing respect for the rapper and producer.
To commemorate Yoongi’s birthday, the official BTS Twitter handle—as opposed to the member-run BTS handle—tweeted hashtags in Korean as well as photographs of Yoongi. Soon after, supporters began translating the hashtags into English, and the tale of suing Min Yoongi resumed.
