Why are May 1 Maharashtra Day and Gujarat Day celebrated? Historical Background and Importance
International Labor Day is honored on May 1 all across the world. However, the day is commemorated as Maharashtra Day and Gujarat Day in Maharashtra and Gujarat, respectively. The day is celebrated with zeal since it was 62 years ago that the two states were founded on this day.
Multiple parades, festivals, and ceremonies are held across the two states to commemorate the day. The festivities will emphasize the two countries’ cultures and customs. The primary function in Maharashtra is held in Shivaji Park in Dadar. The primary event in Gujarat is held near the Sabarmati Waterfalls.
MAHARASHTRA DAY AND GUJARAT DAY ORIGINATIONS
Following the implementation of the Indian Constitution, the country was divided into states based on linguistic boundaries. Bombay was granted statehood under the State Recognition Act in 1956. Bombay had individuals speaking Marathi, Gujarati, Konkani, and Kutchi at its establishment.
The blending of multiple vocabularies into a single state caused chaos and suffering. Due to these language discrepancies, the state’s sacredness was repeatedly shaken. Movements emerged calling for creating two forms, one for Gujarati and Kutchi speakers and the other for Marathi and Konkani speakers. The Mahagujarat and Samyukta Maharashtra movements became the public face of these aspirations.
The state of Bombay was partitioned into Maharashtra and Gujarat after being passed by Parliament. The Indian government decided to draught the Bombay Reorganisation Act after observing the growing momentum of demonstrations in various parts of the state. The bill was inscribed into law on May 1, 1960, and the day is now known as Maharashtra Day in Maharashtra and Gujarat Day in Gujarat.
