Flipkart apologizes after being chastised for promoting kitchen equipment on Women’s Day

“We messed up, and we apologize,” Flipkart said. “We did not intend to harm anyone’s feelings, and we apologize for the prior Women’s Day message,” it added.

This year’s International Women’s Day events were centered on “Break the Bias.” In India, though, they found itself in hot water after releasing a message on the day that reinforced the idea that women belong in the kitchen.

For International Women’s Day, the e-commerce company chose to provide a discount on kitchen appliances, which was deemed sexist by many online. “Dear Client, Let’s celebrate You on International Women’s Day. “Get Kitchen Appliances from $299,” the firm wrote in a promotional text message.

Netizens quickly pointed out the partiality following Flipkart’s discount message.

“Can you find the issue here?” tweeted a user who shared a screenshot of the message. “On Women’s Day, Flipkart essentially says, ‘Go back to the kitchen,'” another user stated. “Women’s Day is celebrated by promoting, sustaining, and glorifying gender roles.” “If irony had a definition, this should be it,” someone else said.
Flipkart issued an apology on Twitter soon after many criticized the firm for failing to recognize women’s different roles in real life and instead opting to propagate stereotypes. “We messed up, and we apologize,” Flipkart said. “We did not intend to harm anyone’s feelings, and we apologize for the prior Women’s Day message,” it added.
“Actually, for us at @Flipkart, equality is a resounding sentiment that resonates in everything we do. #EveryWoman deserves a space to lead, grow, and realize her aspirations,” said Rajneesh Kumar, the company’s Chief of Corporate Affairs.
Many people were relieved that the corporation apologized and hoped that such errors would not be repeated in the future.
