Assam Governor Inaugurates Hans Renal Care Centre to Provide Free Dialysis Services in Guwahati

A collaboration between The Hans Foundation and Indian Red Cross Society aims to bridge the healthcare gap for marginalized communities in Assam.

In a transformative step for healthcare access in Assam, the Hans Foundation (THF) and the Indian Red Cross Society (IRCS), Assam State Branch, inaugurated the Hans Renal Care Centre at the Red Cross Hospital in Chandmari, Guwahati. This state-of-the-art dialysis unit is dedicated to providing free, high-quality renal care for patients in need, particularly from economically disadvantaged communities.
The centre was inaugurated by Assam Governor Shri Lakshman Prasad Acharya, who also serves as the President of the IRCS, Assam State Branch. The event was graced by notable dignitaries, including A K Absar Hazarika, Chairman of IRCS Assam State Branch, Sandeep J Kapur, CEO of The Hans Foundation, Padmashree Ajoy Kumar Dutta, Vijay Jamwal, Senior Director of The Hans Foundation, and others. The Hans Renal Care Centre is poised to serve as a lifeline for patients grappling with chronic kidney disease (CKD) in Assam, a region where access to affordable dialysis services has been limited.

Bridging the Gap in Renal Care
Equipped with cutting-edge dialysis technology, the Hans Renal Care Centre aims to address the growing healthcare burden posed by CKD. According to reports, Assam has seen a significant rise in kidney-related ailments, with marginalized communities bearing the brunt of inadequate healthcare infrastructure.
Sandeep J Kapur, CEO of The Hans Foundation, emphasized the importance of this initiative:
“Our mission is to ensure that every individual, regardless of their socioeconomic background, has access to life-saving healthcare. The Hans Renal Care Centre is a testament to our commitment to empowering communities, fostering hope, and improving access to essential medical services.”

A Testament to Collaboration
The Hans Renal Care Centre is the result of a strategic partnership between The Hans Foundation and the IRCS, Assam State Branch. Speaking at the inauguration, Deba Prasad Sarma, General Secretary of IRCS, Assam State Branch, remarked:
“This partnership marks a significant milestone in improving healthcare delivery in Assam. The new dialysis unit at Red Cross Hospital will not only provide critical care but also serve as a beacon of compassion and service to humanity.”

Physiotherapy Centre Launched at the Same Location
Alongside the Hans Renal Care Centre, the event also saw the inauguration of the Red Cross Physiotherapy Centre, which offers comprehensive rehabilitation services for individuals with physical disabilities, chronic conditions, and injuries. Equipped with state-of-the-art technology and staffed by experienced physiotherapists, the centre focuses on enhancing mobility and improving the quality of life for its patients.
A K Absar Hazarika, Chairman of IRCS, Assam State Branch, shared his thoughts on this development: “The launch of the Red Cross Physiotherapy Centre reaffirms our commitment to holistic healthcare. By addressing mobility challenges and empowering individuals to lead healthier lives, we are making a meaningful difference in the lives of those who need it most.”

Impact of Chronic Kidney Disease in Assam
The prevalence of CKD is a pressing concern in Assam. Limited access to affordable dialysis services has made it challenging for patients, especially in rural and underserved areas, to receive timely treatment. The Hans Renal Care Centre seeks to bridge this gap by providing free dialysis services, ensuring no one is denied critical care due to financial constraints. Kapur noted that CKD requires long-term treatment and continuous support, both of which are now accessible to vulnerable populations through this initiative.
