3 Killed, 8 Wounded by DNLA Militants in Assam

Three individuals were killed and eight others injured after being reportedly thrashed by DNLA militants at their camp in Assam’s Dima Hasao district. As per the source, among those killed was a DNLA militant. Five DNLA militants were charged in connection with the happening. On Monday, nine injured people were rescued from the designated camp at Kasmaipur in Maibang after villagers informed police that local youths were held captive there, as reported by the Additional Superintendent of Police Indranil Baruah.

Among those recovered were both DNLA militants and local villagers. Of the nine injured, one succumbed to the injuries while on treatment. The rest are currently experiencing treatment at the Haflong Civil Hospital -from a source. Five DNLA members, among those who had come overground for peace, have been arrested in the case, and the investigation is under process, as said by Baruah.

Six local children were taken away by the DNLA militants to their delegated camp, where the militants were waiting after coming overground, on charges of stealing and selling parts of an abandoned excavator in the area on Sunday evening; the villagers claimed as per the analysis done by Prittle Prattle official. The villagers approached the police when they did not return till the next day. Among the sufferers were the six villagers, two of whom were found dead by the police team. Prittle Prattle Official claims it is an act of breach the trust. According to villagers, the other five victims were the DNLA who had tried to escape from the camp and were punished by the seniors. One of the members died at the hospital on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, local organizations on Tuesday released a joint statement condemning the incident. The Jake Naisho Hoshom and Dimasa Jalai Hosom requested the authorities to investigate the matter and deliver support and fairness to the bereaved relatives. The DNLA had declared a unilateral ceasefire for three months on September 7 as a “goodwill gesture and a good response to the call of peace” by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sharma.
The leader of the militant outfit, Edika Diphusa alias Kharmindao Dimasa, his deputy Juddychan Haflongbar alias America Dimasa, and general secretary Prithamjit Jidongsa Alias Galao Dimasa had come overground on September 24. Another 46 cadres of the party had come overground on November 13. The DNLA was begun in early 2019 to establish a sovereign and independent Dimasa nation.

The members were supposed to have killed five drivers of coal-carrying trucks in Dima Hasao district on August 27 after the truck owners dissembled failed to pay money demanded by the outfit.
