Hundreds of journalists are on the frontlines of the Ukrainian war, risking their lives in the face of severe shelling and attacks. People’s hearts are being tugged online by a reporter’s tweet about quitting war journalism. However, the heinous atrocities committed by Russian soldiers on civilians, especially children, are taking a heavy toll on their mental health.
Illia Ponomarenko, a defense correspondent for The Kyiv Independent, has been reporting from the front lines since the Russian invasion of Ukraine began on February 24. Ponomarenko turned to Twitter to voice his fury after witnessing disaster every day.
“When this conflict is over, I will stop covering wars.” “F*** it,” Ponomarenko tweeted while reporting on the atrocities in Bucha. “I will find a peaceful secluded area to live and write books about whales and arctic explorers,” he continued.
In an address to the United Nations Security Council (UNSC), Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy accused Russian troops of committing “the most terrible war crimes” since World War II on the streets of Bucha, where more than 300 bodies were discovered.
Earlier in the day, while reporting from Kyiv’s outskirts, where proof of brutal civilian massacres has stunned the world, he noted that his old Bucha apartment had survived. “This used to be part of my favorite cycling route via Bucha.” “I now find it difficult to recognize many of the streets I used to know in Kyiv Oblast,” Ponomarenko added in another tweet.
As he continued his reporting, the tweet about quitting war journalism gained traction after being retweeted by former Ukrainian ambassador to Austria Olexander Scherba. Many people flocked to the post office to send him their love and congratulate him on his bravery and resilience.
While praying for his safety and hoping that the conflict would stop soon, many people commented with photographs and videos to comfort him. In contrast, others invited him to lovely destinations when things improved.
