The party’s strong message to poll-bound states is reflected in its cabinet reshuffle.

The BJP’s massive overhaul on Wednesday is a statement of complete support for regional leaders like Yogi Adityanath in Uttar Pradesh and BS Yeddyurappa in Karnataka.

The latter have experienced adversities but have won the party’s consent. Uttar Pradesh now has 15 members on the council of ministers, with additions made in light of the imminent assembly primaries in the state, which are vital to the BJP’s fortunes and will be viewed as a bellwether outcome ahead of the 2024 Lok Sabha election.

While Kurmis have been well represented, the Yogi cabinet is set to change, with regional parties like the Nishad outfit and Rajbhar community leaders likely to gain seats. The resignation of Santosh Gangwar, a junior minister with responsibility for labor, is a strong indicator that state politicians must gather around Yogi and accept him as the leader.

Similarly, in Karnataka, Shobha Karandlaje’s entrance and promotion and the departure of senior party leader Sadanand Gowda send a message that the party has no intention of replacing Yeddyurappa as its face in the state.

Her nomination is a snub to the effort to upset Yesdyurappa since she is seen as an effective and fiery leader. This has not amused the party’s top command, and dissenters have been assured that the state government’s performance has been satisfactory. Their reservations about the role of the CM’s son Vijayendra have not been taken seriously.

Even in Maharashtra and Gujarat, the BJP leadership has taken a cautious approach to a long-term strategy. Narayan Rane’s appointment as a Cabinet minister sends a solid message to the Shiv Sena that the BJP is preparing to win elections on its own in the future. Rane, a Konkan mainstay, has been at odds with the Shiv Sena, which has a significant presence in the area.

The ascension of Mansukh Mandaviya and Parshottam Rupala, both members of the powerful Patidar group, comes before Gujarat’s state assembly elections, which are scheduled for late next year. The Patidar movement made it difficult for the BJP to win in the 2017 assembly elections, as the saffron party won by a razor-thin margin in Modi’s home state of Gujarat.
