The MPA gathered and analyzed available parking spaces, parking needs for each type of vehicle, duration, pick-up/drop-off facility, and loading/unloading facility during a month-long study and strategically allotted the spaces available for these functions.

“We investigated the demand for and availability of parking, the kind of cars parked on a stretch of road, and so on. We examined this data in conjunction with the width of the roadways in question to determine if parallel parking or roadside parking is permitted. “We have classified locations in the wards based on the need for parking spaces,” stated an MPA employee.

The MPA, which was formed in January of this year, was approved by the BMC’s standing committee in May and is led by extra municipal commissioner P Velrasu. The authority has also provided recommendations regarding the planning and regulating all city roadways and roadside parking lots. According to officials, experts appointed by the authority will carry out nine tasks, including studying legal issues concerning workforce implementation, preparing a comprehensive plan for parking management in all 24 wards, drafting parking policy, uniform signage, and researching proper parking rates.

Mumbai Municipal Commissioner IS Chahal has also proposed establishing a city parking pool, an online aggregator platform with information on all available parking spots in the city. “All other government agencies with parking spaces must be informed to participate in the city parking pool (CPP) to ensure that residents may reserve any parking slot in the city using a single platform,” Chahal added. In addition to authorizing the pilot project, the authority stated that three plots — one sized 10,000 square meters in M East and two scrapyards in H East — are in the process of being approved for use as scrapyards.
