Indira Gandhi was a multifaceted woman whose leadership in India has had long-lasting consequences. She was sworn in as the country’s first female prime minister on January 24, 1966; honor of that occasion, here are seven amazing facts about her incredible life. Indira Nehru’s life was dominated by politics almost from the day she was born in 1917.

Her father, Jawaharlal Nehru, was a leader in India’s independence from British control. Therefore Indira was a natural supporter of this cause. One strategy employed by India’s nationalist movement was the rejection of foreign — notably British — products. Indira observed a conflagration of foreign products at an early age.

Later, the 5-year-old decided to destroy her special doll because it was made in England. Indira Gandhi was the first and only female prime minister of India. She was India’s first prime minister, Jawaharlal Nehru, not Mahatma Gandhi, as her surname suggests. She ruled from 1966 to 1977, was re-elected in 1980, and was slain while still in office in 1984.

There was such a public outpouring of opposition to the match that Mahatma Gandhi was forced to issue a public declaration of support, which included the request: “I ask the writers of insulting letters to shed your wrath and bless the approaching marriage.” Indira and Feroze were married in 1942. Even though the couple had two boys together, the marriage was not a success. Feroze had adulterous affairs, while Indira spent a lot of time with her father once he became Prime Minister of India in 1947.

Feroze’s death in 1960 brought an end to marriage.  Indira faced a problem in 1971 when forces from West Pakistan invaded Bengali East Pakistan to quell the independence movement.

On March 31, she spoke out against the heinous brutality, but harsh treatment persisted, and millions of refugees began to pour into neighboring India.
