A good newspaper provides us much more than just news

Nowadays, when everyone is more or less educated, virtually everyone reads some kind of daily newspaper. One man that never reads a newspaper is out of touch with current events. We want to be aware of whatever is going on in society, not just for our own sake, but also to communicate intelligently with our peers. And, in every country, there are enough newspapers of all types to satisfy even the most voracious reader. In reality, the risk is not that people should not read newspapers, but that they should spend more time reading newspapers than is necessary. A newspaper’s principal function, as the name indicates, is to provide us with the news. That is the first thing we look for in our daily paper. What was the day’s news? What has been going on at home? What is going on in other countries?

The publication contains the most recent news about political happenings and movements and the results of cricket, football, hockey, tennis matches, famous horse races, auto races, cycle races, and so on. Some people are interested in police news and read about crimes, criminal captures, and law-court cases. These days, we, too, anxiously await news about other countries and the current world situation, and we debate the pressing issues of peace and war. Film enthusiasts read the newest news about their favorite actors and the latest films to be released. People with various tastes read papers for different types of news.

An excellent newspaper, on the other hand, provides us with much more than just news. We read it on politics, social issues, and other topics. And here is where we must exercise caution. Reading the news is one thing; reading a newspaper’s commentary on the news, as well as its views on political and social issues, is quite another. We must not take everything it says as gospel but rather sift it for ourselves. The vast majority of newspaper readers are apathetic. Only a small number of people think for themselves and create their ideas. This is a colossal blunder. We must learn to analyze and criticize, and we must refuse to accept ready-made ideas from our preferred newspaper. “Read not to disagree and confute, not to trust and take for granted,” Bacon writes, “but to weigh and consider.”
