Mehul Sharma, Founder & CEO of Signum Hotels & Resorts, Shares His Journey and Vision for the Future

Signum Hotels has become a beacon of innovation and tradition in the hospitality industry. Mehul Sharma, the visionary Founder & CEO, has seamlessly blended these elements to elevate the brand. In this in-depth interview, Sharma shares his journey, the challenges faced, and his aspirations for the future, offering a glimpse into the evolving landscape of global hospitality.

What inspired you to establish Signum Hotels & Resorts, and what were some initial challenges you faced in the early days?

The root of “Signum” is Latin for sign or mark, and is carefully chosen to reflect the brand’s mission to make a strong impact in the hospitality industry. Originally an Indian brand, our goal was to achieve global status by showcasing Indian hospitality to the world. When COVID-19 hit, we faced significant challenges but saw opportunities to innovate and expand.

Taking bold risks, we have branched out into the UK and the Middle East, we strived for growth and proved our adaptability. This decision, which we have made without additional funding, and involving the relocation of our entire management team from India, underscored our commitment to efficiency and flexibility. Our focus on providing unparalleled service and convenience has been the cornerstone of our success, driving our global growth and reinforcing the value of our brand to hotel owners, employees and customers.

How has your vision for Signum evolved over the past five years, and what are your key goals for the future?

Over the past several years, Signum’s vision has evolved significantly. Initially focused on establishing a strong organisational structure, we now aim to build an Indian brand recognized globally. Expanding into the UK and the Middle East has opened new frontiers of impeccable Indian standards of warmth and hospitality, proving that our hospitality can succeed internationally.

Our key goals for the future include expanding operations to new countries and continents, and showcasing how Indian hospitality can shine globally. Our goal is to provide an experiential stay, with an emphasis on sustainability, and personalised services to make every guest feel special. Signum is committed to being “vocal for local”, promoting local culture and traditions and representing Indian hospitality on the world stage. By maintaining high standards and embracing innovation, we want to set new benchmarks and take Indian hospitality to a new level.

As an experienced hotelier, how do you foster innovation and maintain high standards across your properties globally?

Being a hotelier for several years, I encourage innovation and set a high agenda all over the world embracing technological advancements and investing in our team. Through the effective use of technology we target to automate most of the processes to increase efficiency and satisfaction of guests. Staff receive standardised training to be certain that they offer clients high-quality service; frequent assessments for errors and meetings allow us to tackle problems at the first sign of them.

The centralised processes ensure consistency in all hotel and resorts being developed, and environmental conservation is an attribute that is appreciated in the current world. Networking also plays an important role; establishing good relations in the respective industry provides the necessary contacts for new business and better services. Through technological advancement and quality that do not compromise, we deliver the best experience to our guests across the globe.

Can you share an example of an innovative approach or strategy implemented at Signum that significantly impacted its success?
One of Signum Hotel’s new approaches is Staiforce, an augmented reality tool developed by our UK team. Staiforce will revolutionise our business, reducing payroll costs by an impressive 4-5%. This in-house feature improves employee productivity and guest interaction through personalised, real-time service enhancements. The impact of technology and hospitality has been remarkable.
We are excited to launch Staiforce in two weeks and are confident it will set a new industry standard. This innovation demonstrates our commitment to using state-of-the-art technology to drive success and deliver exceptional value to our guests. Staiforce not only streamlines our processes but also improves guest experience, firmly positioning Signum Hotels as a leader in hospitality innovation.
What emerging trends in the hospitality industry do you believe will have the most significant impact in the next few years, and how is Signum preparing for them?
Emerging trends in hospitality emphasise personal involvement, sustainability and community engagement. At Signum Hotels, we recognize that over 80% of travellers want personalised services, and 70% are looking for environmentally friendly options. Our strategy, “Think Global, Act Local,” is to be “vocal for local,” and to use and produce local ingredients while integrating global innovation, supporting local businesses and hosting guests seeking authentic experiences.
Expanding into Tier 2 and 3 cities allows us to bring our high standards to new markets, promote local culture and unique accommodations. Our focus on experiential stays ensures guests have an exceptional and enriching visit. By recognizing these factors, Signum is poised to lead the industry, delivering exceptional experiences while maintaining a strong commitment to sustainability and local engagement.
