PowerSutra is an Indian D2C brand with a global presence

Prittle Prattle in conversation with Ms. Dr. Pooja Malhotra, Founder, PowerSutra

PowerSutra is a high-end women’s workwear and fashion label. Assisting women in selecting the correct garments with the perfect fit for the leader within them.

Ms. Pooja Malhotra, Please explain your path from MBBS to a successful company owner.
The journey from a doctor to a founder of a fashion company wasn’t easy. It was like a road not taken, and I took the one less traveled, And that has made all the difference. I have been a Doctor with over 15 years of experience in medicine working with the best hospitals in the field – like Max, Fortis, W Pratiksha, Safdarjung, Hindu Rao, and Lady Hardinge Medical College. etc to name a few. I am also an internationally published author, a passionate fashionista, a mother, and an entrepreneur. PowerSutra is my brainchild, something that I personally manage right down. I started this brand with the aim to fill the gap that existed in the fashion Industry. The journey wasn’t easy, I had a family and a career that I need to balance but my passion for fashion made it easy and finally in 2020 when the world stopped I started this brand.

Tell us about Power Sutra’s future ambitions.
We have recently started catering to international markets as well and are receiving good responses. In the long run, we intend to make Power Sutra a global D2C brand coming out of India which caters to the desk-to-dinner dressing needs of women of all sizes. We aim to bring change into society and make every woman feel beautiful in her own way. Body positivity needs to be continued and stereotyping fashion or styling, for extremes of sizes (petite and plus), needs to be changed and we at PowerSutra want that.

What was the motivation behind launching Power Sutra?
I believe every woman irrespective of size is beautiful and deserves to look her best. To fill the gap of non-availability of tasteful clothes and lack of variety in plus size clothing inspired me to launch the brand PowerSutra. The motivation behind it was that my initiative was going to bring a change in society and help someone find a place of comfort.
What will happen to PowerSutra in the next five years?
We have recently started catering to international markets as well and are receiving good responses. In the long run, we intend to make Power Sutra a global D2C brand coming out of India which caters to the dress dinner dressing needs of women of all sizes. PowerSutra aims to grow and bring solutions to the consumer in the best way possible. We promote sustainable ways of fashion. What recommendations do you have for students who want to work in the fashion industry?
Fashion is a form of self-expression in the context of clothing, accessories, lifestyle, makeup, and hairdo. My suggestion to the youth who are interested in fashion is that one must know what fashion means to them. The zeal to do something that can ultimately contribute to society, and bring a change to the platform. Being passionate about fashion and working hard for it is all you need. About starting a career in fashion I would suggest doing market research and knowing what the consumers want is the best way you could go on with it.
What are your thoughts on the Indian fashion business compared to overseas markets?
Fashion is a self-representation of how one feels. It is a basic need, but in the modern world has become a reflection of your personality. You dress the way you want to be perceived. The Indian fashion business is versatile and one of the oldest industries. We in India have adopted western form fashion with open hands and continue to do so. In India, we see a beautiful mix of both Indian and western fashion across the spectrum. We are building brands that are shattering the existing stereotypes relating to gender and size. The Indian Fashion Industry is continuously growing and adopting a lot of fashion trends and changes. As for the overseas fashion market, it has been seen to be more welcoming to the stereotypes existing in the fashion realm. The market is large and is catering to the fashion industry around the globe with a variety of fashion solutions. India has a long way to go in terms of fashion as the market is uncertain and keeps on changing. Technology is now playing a pivotal role in the growth of the apparel and fabrics industry and to be at the forefront of it one needs to accept the change. Also, sustainability is another factor and brands are shifting to a more sustainable method of production. The Indian apparel market is growing immensely and has a bright future ahead.
