Nowruz 2022: Google honours the Persian New Year with a vibrant Doodle

Nowruz is one of the oldest holidays, with a history dating back over 3,000 years.

Google marked Nowruz 2022, the first day of spring and the formal start of the Persian New Year, with a colourful doodle.

Nowruz is one of the oldest holidays, with a history dating back over 3,000 years. The 13-day festival begins with the spring equinox, when the sun crosses the equator for the first time. This is commonly used to represent rebirth and the affirmation of life in connection with nature.

Nowruz originated in the Iranian religion of Zoroastrianism and is consequently entrenched in the traditions of the Iranian peoples; nevertheless, it has been celebrated for almost 3,000 years by numerous cultures throughout Western Asia, Central Asia, the Caucasus, the Black Sea Basin, the Balkans, and South Asia. Nowruz is a sacred day for Zoroastrians, Bahás, and some Muslim groups, despite the fact that it is generally a secular celebration for most celebrants and appreciated by people of various religions and ethnicities.

The very first day of the Iranian calendar is the March equinox, or the first day of spring, which occurs around March 21. The Iranian calendar was modified in the 11th century CE to establish the beginning of the calendar year, i.e. Nowruz, at the spring equinox. As a result, the Iranian scientist Tusi defined Nowruz as “The first day of the official New Year was always the day where the sun entered Aries before noon.” Nowruz is the first day of Farvardin, the Iranian solar calendar’s first month.
