Odisha: Enclosed by hills and rivers, the city of Rourkela is established in the state of Odisha. Popularly named the ‘Steel City of Odisha’ and Ispat Nagar, it is one of the country’s first cities to grow commercialized for steel production. Nevertheless, Rourkela’s natural positioning in the lap of nature addresses it as an offbeat tourist spot for nearby areas.

Odisha: Rich in naturally happening minerals, Rourkela has also been blessed with various relief features and typical visitor destinations. Happening in the Sundergarh area of Odisha, Rourkela has held a stopover destination before visiting the other famous destinations nearby. It also has great religious significance due to its influence in epics like the Ramayana and Mahabharata.

History 

Surmounted by the mountains and surrounded by rivers, the land of Rourkela speaks the fantastic story of India and holds great religious significance. The city is dotted with impressive temples that have witnessed essential Hindu epics like the Ramayana and Mahabharata. Vedvyas Temple, an outstanding tourist attraction, is the same place where Ved Vyas, the narrator of Mahabharat, saged the perfect book. Hanuman Vatika, which hosts some 75 feet tall idol of Hanuman, is referred to as the pride of Odisha and has remained talked about in the holy book of the Ramayana.

Rourkela owes its growth and industrialization to the Germans, especially the German companies Krupp and Demag, who established India’s first public sector steel mill facility. In specific 1950s and 1960s, Rourkela remained the most significant German community outside of Germany. Due to the influx of many Germans, a diaspora of the Indo-German mix was formed in the town. The Germans also combined with the local tribal communities and trained them to work in the steel plants. Many stories and legends recount eerie tales of Germans and locals passing in the nearby Vedyas caves and the rapids of the river Koel. Another famous restricted legend is a Royal Bengal Tiger’s loss in the steel plant’s eruption forge.
