Cape Town is a city and seaport in South Africa and the provincial capital of the Western Cape province. The town is located near the northern extremity of the Cape Peninsula, approximately 30 miles north of the Cape of Good Hope. Cape Town is recognized as the country’s “mother city” since it was the first European settlement in South Africa.

Portions of Cape Town and its suburbs twist around the steep slopes of Table Mountain and neighboring peaks, rimming the coasts of Table Bay; other parts lie on the flats below the slopes or reach southward over the apartments to False Bay. The city has a total size of 116 square miles (300 square kilometers). The urban agglom. has a population of 3,103,000 people (as of 2005).

The city of Cape Town began in 1652 when the Dutch East India Company built a refreshment stop for its ships on the beaches of Table Bay. The setting was spectacular, on well-watered, rich soil beneath the towering cliffs of Table Mountain. The local people provided cattle but not labor, and the business imported slaves, primarily from East Africa, Madagascar, and the Bay of Bengal region.

The slaves took a piece of their culture with them and, in the case of the Muslims from the East Indies, their faith. Mixed-race marriages occurred, but significant racial and ethnic traits persisted. The French maintained a garrison in 1781 to assist the Dutch in defending the city from British invasion, and their presence impacted local architecture and culture. The British company in the nineteenth century introduced new parliamentary and judicial systems and freedom for slaves. Cape Town served as the entry point for Europeans into South Africa’s interior, and close links with continental Europe were maintained.
