Covid-19 Update: Mumbai residents can contact ward-war rooms in their local locations for Covid-19 beds and ambulances; find hotline numbers here

In the midst of a tremendous increase in COVID-19 cases in the city, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has requested Mumbai residents to phone a particular hotline number and ward-war rooms if a Covid bed or ambulance is required in their specific districts or wards.

Since the pandemic breakout, the BMC hotline number 1916 has been dedicated to answering questions regarding covid-19 and assisting individuals in providing information on the availability of beds and vaccine centers placed in separate wards.

Mumbai recorded 15,166 new COVID-19 cases on Wednesday, the city’s highest-ever day total and an increase of 4,306 from the previous day, while three more people died from the virus, according to the city municipal authority.

With these additions, the city’s overall coronavirus count grew to 8,33,628, while the mortality toll increased to 16,384, according to a bulletin issued by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC).

Mumbai has reported the most COVID-19 cases in a single day since the pandemic’s onset in March 2020, at 15,166. On Tuesday, the city had reported 10,860 instances, and the most recent tally represents a surge of 4,306 cases, or 39.65%, in only 24 hours.

One of the important lessons for the city’s civic authority, Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation, from the early months of the pandemic has been that thorough triaging of patients is required to guarantee the greatest use of resources. The process of deciding the priority of patients’ therapies based on the severity of their ailment or the possibility of recovery with and without therapy is known as ‘triage.’ The principal function of the Covid-19 war rooms, one in each of Mumbai’s 24 wards, is triage.

An all-Mumbai BMC bed tracker dashboard provides real-time updates on the bed availability across hospitals and Jumbo covid facilities under various classifications: patients who are Covid-19-positive, further broken down into those who require oxygen and those who do not; suspected Covid-19 patients, also broken down into those who require oxygen and those who do not; patients needing admission to Intensive Care Units, pediatric ICU, neonatal ICU; pregnant women; those are needing intubation These categories are further subdivided by the facility. Each facility is responsible for updating the numbers in real-time. Take a look at the BMC tweet below:

Every day, all 24 war rooms receive a list of Covid-19 positive patients in their respective wards from the Indian Council of Medical Research, which receives information from all government and commercial laboratories that do RT-PCR testing. They also receive calls from persons who have Covid-19 symptoms but have yet to receive confirming testing or test results. Data regarding persons exhibiting symptoms is also fed in by health personnel conducting contact tracing on the ground.

The battle center crew are largely BMC school teachers, many of whom have been mobilized for Covid-19 service from as far away as Palghar, Vasai, and Virar. Data entry operators and physicians assist them.
The teachers contact each individual on the list and note all pertinent information, such as oxygen saturation levels, symptoms, comorbidities, immunization status, and the sort of dwelling they reside in.
Since May of last year, Jadhav has been in charge of the K-East ward’s war room, which includes the suburbs of Andheri East, Jogeshwari East, and Vile Parle East. The pandemic feels unending. It was stated that several members of the crew had worked for weeks on end without a break. While established protocols and practices assist in keeping things operating smoothly, a lack of medical facilities was felt severe when cases spiked drastically for a few days in March. According to the review, the war room received up to 2,000 calls each day on average. BMC tweet on Covid-19 Ambulance and bed requirements:

Dr. Nilesh Tiwari, who is in charge of keeping track of and dealing with airport cases (the Mumbai airport is part of the K-East ward) as well as ensuring hotel quarantine protocol enforcement, stated that they are well aware that sometimes their best effort is not enough, but the learning curve has been steep, and every individual in the war room has stepped up to combat.
