AHPI and IMA jointly launched book on Prevention of Violence Against Healthcare Professionals at USII

The Association of Healthcare Providers of India (AHPI) and the Indian Medical Association (IMA), the country’s two largest associations of healthcare providers (institutional and individual).

Representing over 10,000 healthcare institutions and 3,75,000 individual healthcare professionals, have joined forces to address the healthcare sector’s most pressing issue: violence against healthcare professionals.

Following the heartbreaking tragedy of Dr. Archana Sharma’s suicide by suicide eight months ago as a result of relentless harassment, AHPI and IMA collaborated on a publication to bring attention to this tough problem.

The book, titled “Perils in Practice: Prevention of Violence Against Healthcare Professionals,” aims to empower healthcare workers by providing guidance on their protection (including more effective communication) and examining the role of the health sector, the media, policymakers, law enforcement, regulators, and the community.

At the book’s launch on Sunday, October 16 at the United Services Institution of India in New Delhi, both the AHPI and IMA Presidents, Dr. Alexander Thomas and Dr. Sahajanand Prasad Singh, expressed their dismay at the state of healthcare workers in India today and emphasised the urgent need for change.

The publishing of this book solidified the organisations’ alliance, and they thought it would be the start of a national movement toward sensitization and empowerment.

Former Union Health Secretary Smt. Preeti Sudan released the book, commending the editors for providing a comprehensive and holistic view of the subject, and recommending that the first step in correcting the situation be the appointment of an Ombudsman to mediate between doctor and patient in cases of dispute.

Among those who spoke during the release were Dr. R. V. Asokan (IMA President-Elect), Dr. K. K. Talwar (former Chair, Medical Council of India), Shri D. V. Guruprasad (Former DGP, Karnataka), Shri Seethalakshmi (former Editor, City, Times of India), and Dr. Giridhar Gyani (DG, AHPI).
