Mumbai: Mumbai hospitals will employ luxury hotels to treat COVID-19 patients with lesser infections. The city administration announced Thursday that it tries to build up resources for patients requiring critical care as the number of cases rises. Beginning today, two hotels will serve as extensions of private hospitals.
To accommodate more patients, private hospitals will partner with four or five-star hotels, and those who do not require critical care will likely be transferred from hospitals to hotels. Doctors must approve such transfers.
According to the BMC, the hotels, classified as “step down facilities” where minimal medical assistance is necessary for Covid patients, would function as extensions of big private hospitals (Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation). For Covid situations, the hotels will require a minimum of 20 rooms and will provide round-the-clock medical services such as doctor consultations, nurses, medications, and ambulance transport.
Hospitals can charge up to 4,000 for these services and 6,000 for a room if someone stays with the patient. Asymptomatic Covid positive folks can also stay in these hotels.
“Private hospitals and connected hotels must have appropriate knowledge and seamless collaboration,” the BMC stated.
Officials stated that this was done to guarantee that more hospital beds are available for people who truly require them.
The injunction comes as a significant number of Covid cases in Mumbai and other cities in Maharashtra are reported in the dangerous second wave of infections.
On Wednesday, there were 9,931 new cases and 54 fatalities in Mumbai.
“It has been observed that many beds in private hospitals are occupied by patients who do not require emergency medical intervention; such patients may be properly and sufficiently maintained at isolation facilities such as step-down facilities,” the public health agency stated in a notification.
To deal with the influx of viral cases, the administration has planned to convert certain private hospitals into Covid centers for enhanced critical care.
According to the rule of the Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai, it would only admit Covid patients, and those who require advanced care will be transferred to neighboring hospitals within 48 hours.
Patients who do not require critical treatment at Bombay Hospital in south Mumbai will be sent to the Intercontinental Hotel on Marine Drive. Patients from HN Reliance Foundation Hospital will be transferred to the Trident Hotel in the Bandra-Kurla Complex.
Thirty extra ICU beds will be added to Seven Hills Hospital today, and 1,500 more beds will be added at NESCO Jumbo within a week.
Municipal Commissioner IS Chahal declared that an additional 250 Covid beds (including 40 ICU beds) would be available on the BMC dashboard beginning Saturday am to assist needy individuals.
Mumbai registered 9,925 new COVID-19 cases on Wednesday, bringing the total to 5,44,942, while 54 more people died from the virus, according to the city municipal authority.
After hovering below 8,000 for the previous two days, the daily case tally in the financial capital increased. On Monday, there were 6,905 COVID-19 instances in the city, followed by 7,898 on Tuesday.
