Ways With Rice Easy To Make & Healthy To Eat

Rice is one of the most important part of our diets and our food system which we have been a part of since so many years.

Many countries including India use rice as one of the staple foods as a part of our meals in daily life. We love rice in various forms, textures, recipes and from starters to main dishes to desserts, rice has found its way into our stomach and has won our heart in many ways.

We have seen rice being made since our childhood from the popular white rice, steamed rice, boiled rice, pulao’s and biryanis and not to forget the rice kheer, phirni and payassam from South India. Rice has been available to us in various varieties from the polished and unpolished version, from the ukhda variety to the kolam, from pulao basmati Tukda to the long grain basmati rice and adding in lately has been the brown rice which is also healthy and should be included for its nutritional benefits in our diets once in a while.

We use leftover rice the next day too in many ways from giving it a tadka with our Indian spices from chilies to mustard, cumin seeds, curry leaves, a pinch of spices and coriander etc and it just changes the look and taste of it. We also make rice cutlets, tikkis, kababs, koftas and the rice kheer is one common way to use it as well.

Besides this we also use rice flour in many ways from making Chawal ki roti, bhakri, using it for coating, for making our steamed modaks etc. rice has somewhere   

Here are 3 simple easy and Healthy Rice Recipes to try:

Recipe-1] Khile Khile Subzi Wale Chawal

[rice tossed with mixed vegetables in a tangy spicy sauce]


Boiled cooked white rice- 2 cups, Oil/ghee- 2 tbsp, Jeera- 1 tsp, Green chili- 2 no cut, Onion- 1 small cut & Tomatoes- 2 cut.

For the Variety of Vegetables:

Carrots/ beans/ peas/capsicums/ cauliflower/ brinjal/potatoes etc we can choose- cut into small pieces and fry them and keep aside.

Salt to taste, Garam masala powder- 1 tsp, Turmeric powder-1/2tsp, Red chili powder- 1 tsp, Tomato ketchup- 2- 3 tbsp.

Chili sauce- 1 tbsp., Schezuan chutney- 2 tbsp., Fresh coriander-2 tbsp. chopped., Roasted crushed peanuts- 2 tbsp.


1. Prepare all the ingredients for the recipe.

2. Heat oil/ghee in a pan, add in the jeera, chilies, onion and fry for few minutes, if you want you can add ginger and garlic also.

3. Cook for few minutes add in the tomatoes, salt and all masala, add little water and cook the masala on medium flame for 3- 4 mins.

4. Now add in the vegetables which have been cooked first and also add the rice, and sauces, mix well and toss for few seconds.

5. Serve hot garnish it and serve with a bowl of curd/raita/salad/papad.

Recipe- 2] Haldi Aur Nimbu Wale Nutkhut Chawal

[rice tossed in turmeric, lime spices with dates and nuts]


Cooked boiled rice- 2 cups, Ghee/oil- 2 tbsp., Curry leaves- 8-10nos., Red chilies- 2 no. cut, Green chilies- 2 no. cut, Hing- ¼ tsp, Mustard seeds- ½ tsp, Jeera-1/2tsp, Methi seeds-1/2 tsp, Onion-1 small sliced, Tomato-1 small chop, Salt to taste, Turmeric powder-1/2tsp, Lemon juice- 1 no, Fresh coriander leaves- 2 tbsp. chop, Roasted nuts of your choice- 2-3tbsp., Dates- 3-4 no chopped/ can use sliced apricot also


1. Prepare all the ingredients for the recipe.

2. Heat ghee/oil in a pan add in the ingredients for the tadka in the pan, mix for 10 seconds.

3. Add in the onions, tomatoes, cook for 2-3 mins, add in the turmeric, rice, salt and other nuts and fruits of your choice. We can also add green peas, carrots, beans, soya bean chunks or keema, paneer etc as needed in the rice. Cook on slow flame covered for 4-5 mins.

4. Finally add in the lime juice, coriander, add nuts for garnish and serve hot with a bowl of curd, raita or salad and pickle.

Rice – 2 cups, raw- clean, wash and soak for 20 mins

To make the Pulao:

Ghee/oil- 2 tbsp., Tejpatta/dalchini/kali mirch/lavang- as per choice, Ginger garlic paste- 1 tbsp., Sliced onions-1 cup, Tomato-1 big chop, Red and green chilies as per taste, Sliced mushrooms- 1 cup, Spinach leaves- 2 cups clean and cut, Boiled sweet corn-1/2 cup, Salt to taste, Garam masala powder- 1 tsp, Water- as needed to cook the pulao, Kasoori methi- 1 tsp, Fried nuts for garnish

1. Prepare all the ingredients for the recipe.

2. Heat ghee/oil in a pan, add in the whole garam masala as per taste, add in jeera/shahi jeera any one of them for more flavor, add onions, lightly brown it add water as needed, add ginger garlic paste, add tomatoes and continue to brown.

3. Add in the vegetables and rice without the water and mix well, add salt, masala, kasoori methi and stir for 2 mins.

4. Add in water double the quantity, simmer the flame and cover and cook the rice for 12- 15 mins.

5. Mix well check if cooked properly, adjust salt if needed, garnish the pulao with coriander, nuts, grated cheese, brown onions etc and serve hot with a nice chilled bowl of anar and Pudina raita, aam ka achaar and papad.

NOTE: The recipes shared above have been designed in a vegetarian way, if we we wish to add non-veg ingredients we can use boiled eggs, chicken, mutton, fish and prawns also in these recipes.
