According to BMC authorities, Mumbai is unlikely to suffer any water supply cuts this year because the city’s seven drinking water lakes are 18.21 percent full, compared to 17.5 percent last year at the same period.

However, in Mumbai the water levels have stayed stable at about 18 percent for almost a week due to the lack of rain. There had remained no rain in the catchment regions of the seven lakes since July 2, when light to moderate rainfall was reported.

Bhatsa, Middle Vaitarna, Upper Vaitarna, Tansa, and Modak Sagar lakes in Thane and Nashik districts provide water.

Both within the municipal borders of Sanjay Gandhi National Park, Tulsi, and Vihar lakes are the last two. The Bhatsa lake near Thane supplies half of Mumbai’s entire water supply.

While the Modak Sagar catchment region received 6 mm of rain in the previous 24 hours, Tansa received 4 mm, Vihar 16 mm, and Tulsi 6 mm.

The excellent quantity of rain that fell in June helped keep the lake levels stable, according to experts from BMC’s hydraulic engineer department. Because July of the current year, the city has had a lot of rain. Rainfall is expected to resume throughout the state, including Thane and Mumbai, over the weekend, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD).

A yellow notice was issued for Thane and Mumbai on Sunday and Monday, with heavy rain expected in isolated areas. In each next 48 hours, the IMD has projected mild to moderate rain with a few painful periods for Mumbai.

An orange alert has been issued for Sunday and Monday for the south Konkan region, with severe to hefty rain expected in isolated areas.
