In light of the ongoing Chardham Yatra, the Uttarakhand government has decided to prohibit vehicle traffic on mountain routes. The prohibition will be in effect from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. to safeguard pilgrims’ safety.

“It has been decided by the government to ban the movement of vehicles on mountain routes from 10.00 am to 4.00 pm during Chardham Yatra,” said Uttarakhand Transport Commissioner Ranveer Singh Chouhan, confirming the order.

The decision was made to ensure the comfort and safety of pilgrims on the Chardham Yatra.

He predicted that this year’s Chardham Yatra would draw a high number of people.

On the day of Akshay Tritiya, the gates of Gangotri and Yamunotri temples in Uttarkashi district were opened to pilgrims, kicking off the Char Dham yatra.

In the presence of thousands of worshippers, administrative and temple committee officials, the Gangotri gates opened at 11.15 a.m. and the Yamunotri gates opened at 12.15 p.m.

Before the priests began the vedic ceremonies to mark the inauguration of the temples, the idols of goddess Ganga and Yamuna were brought in exquisite palanquins decked with flowers from their winter abodes.

A record number of pilgrims are expected to attend Char Dham this year, as the yatra begins without the COVID-imposed restrictions in place for the first time since 2019.

However, a daily limit on the number of pilgrims visiting the temples has been enforced so that they are not inconvenienced by the restricted lodging available at the Himalayan shrines.
The Chardham Yatra kicked off on Akshaya Tritiya (May 3) with the opening of the Gangotri and Yamunotri temple gateways in Uttarkashi district. Kedarnath will open on May 6th, followed by Badrinath on May 8th.
Meanwhile, the Uttarakhand government has set a daily limit on the number of pilgrims who can visit the Char Dham Yatra. The daily pilgrimage limit is 15,000 for Badrinath, 12,000 for Kedarnath, 7,000 for Gangotri, and 4,000 for Yamunotri.
Pushkar Singh Dhami and his wife also paid a visit to Gangotri to offer prayers and witness the ceremonial opening of the temple gates.
