A Hector’s dolphin that had become entangled in a buoy line was rescued during a dolphin watch cruise in New Zealand. Akaroa Dolphin showed how they noticed the Hector’s dolphin with its tail tied to the buoy line last Friday in a video posted on their Facebook page.
The dolphin was struggling to break loose while her calf swam around her. In the video, the boat comes to a stop near the dolphin and cuts the buoy line from the dolphin’s tail before releasing it into the sea.
The event occurred in Haylocks Bay, a marine reserve where fishing is prohibited, according to Akaroa Dolphins. They also stated in the video commentary that they have never seen dolphins become caught in fishing nets or buoy lines.
The dolphin safari operator warned visitors not to touch marine mammals alone and to “report any entangled/stranded/dead marine mammal sightings to 0800 DOC HOT (0800 362 468) immediately.”

The rescued Hector’s dolphin in the video is native to New Zealand and is considered endangered owing to a diminishing population. An endangered pink river dolphin was rescued from a “shallow grave” in Columbia in January of this year.
