Life is a Beautiful film from the Western World

Life is a Beautiful is a 1997 Italian comedy-drama film directed by and starring Roberto Benigni.

Life is a Beautiful: Guido Orefice, a Jewish Italian bookshop owner, uses his vivid imagination to protect his son from the horrors of imprisonment in a Nazi concentration camp. Benigni plays Guido Orefice. Rubino Romeo Salmon’s book partly inspired the film, In the End, I Beat Hitler and Benigni’s father, who endured two years in a German labor camp.

The film Life is a Beautiful was a huge box office and critical hit. Despite some critiques of utilizing the subject matter for humorous purposes, it gained worldwide acclaim, with critics complimenting its premise, actors, direction, and the marriage of drama with comedy. The film grossed over $230 million worldwide, including $57.6 million in the United States, making it the second-highest-grossing foreign-language film in the United States and one of the highest-grossing non-English language films all time. In addition, it was called one of the top five foreign films of 1998 by the National Board of Review.

The film earned nine David di Donatello Awards, five Nastro d’Argento Awards in Italy, two European Film Awards, and three Academy Awards, including Best Foreign Language Film and Best Actor Benigni, the first for a male non-English performance.

Life is Beautiful was a commercial success in Italy, grossing $48.7 million. Until 2011, when it was eclipsed by Checco Zalone’s What a Beautiful Day, it was the highest-grossing Italian film in its home country.
The picture did well in other countries, making $57.6 million in the United States and Canada and $123.8 million in other regions for $230.1 million worldwide. Until Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, it was the highest-grossing foreign-language film in the United States in 2000.

Benigni won Best Actor for his part at the 71st Academy Awards, while the film also won Best Music, Original Dramatic Score, and Best Foreign Language Film.   As he made his way to the platform to accept his first prize, Benigni jumped on top of the chairs, and while winning his second, he said, “This is a terrible error since I used up all my English!”
