Carmen Jones train, and Joe succumbs to Carmen's overtures that night.

Carmen Jones a 1954 American artistic film directed by Otto Preminger and starring Dorothy Dandridge and Harry Belafonte. Harry Kleiner’s screenplay is based on Oscar Hammerstein II’s lyrics and book for the 1943 Broadway musical of the same name, adapted to the music of Georges Bizet’s 1875 opera Carmen.

Carmen Jones: Henri Meilhac and Ludovic Halevy adapted the 1845 Prosper Merimee novella, Carmen, for the opera.

Carmen implied a CinemaScope and DeLuxe Color film that began shooting inside the first year of Twentieth Century Fox’s switch to widescreen as their primary production mode in 1953. Thus, Carmen Jones was released exactly one year ago, in October 1954.

Carmen Jones was released in October 1954, exactly one year and one month after Fox’s first CinemaScope film, The Robe, premiered in theatres.

Carmen Jones was chosen by the Library of Congress for preservation in the United States National Film Registry in 1992 as being “culturally, historically, or aesthetically important.”

The story follows Carmen Jones, a “shameless vixen” who works in a parachute factory in North Carolina during WWII. Brown, the commander of the Army guards, assigns gorgeous Corporal Joe to bring her to civilian authorities nearly 50 miles away after she gets jailed for arguing with a coworker who reported her for arriving late for work. Naturally, Joe’s fiancée Cindy Lou is furious, as she had agreed to marry him on his leave before he reported for flight school and an eventual officer’s commission.

Joe wants to deliver his prisoner as soon as possible to return to Cindy Lou and his leave. He decides to save time by driving his jeep half the distance to the town where he is taking Carmen across a road marked as unfit for motor vehicles. Carmen recommends they stop for a meal and some romance, and Joe’s denial fuels her desire to seduce him.

Their army jeep becomes bogged in a river and can’t get out. Carmen recommends they stay the night at her grandmother’s house nearby and continue their journey the next day by train, and Joe succumbs to Carmen’s overtures that night.
