The festival, devoted to Lord Ganesha, who is represented with an elephant’s head on a human body, begins on the fourth day following the entrance of the new moon (Shukla Paksha Chaturthi) in the month of Bhadrapada, which usually falls in August or September, according to the Hindu calendar. It concludes on Anant Chaturdashi, the 14th day of the waxing moon (bright half of the moon). Although the event is celebrated throughout the country, the most extravagant celebrations can be found in the western Indian states of Maharashtra and Goa and the southern Indian states of Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, and Andhra Pradesh.

The event is thought to have originated between 271 BC and 1190 AD, during the rule of the Chalukya, Satavahana, and Rashtrakuta empires. However, the first historical mention of it dates back to the 1600s in Pune. Meanwhile, the originator of the Maratha Empire, Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, celebrated Ganesh Chaturthi since Lord Ganesha was regarded their Kuladevata (family deity). In Sanskrit, kula is a clan, while devata is a divinity.

The festival lost its significance over time, but it was revitalized and changed from a private celebration into a major public event in the nineteenth century by Indian freedom hero Bal Gangadhar Tilak to unify people from all walks of life.
