To Kill a Mockingbird

Mockingbird narrative and characters.

Mockingbird: Harper Lee’s literature is set in the United States. It was first published in 1960 and became an instant hit. It is commonly read in high schools and middle schools in the United States.

Mockingbird: The Pulitzer Prize-winning novel To Kill a Mockingbird has become a modern American classic. Lee’s observations of her family, neighbors, and an event near her birthplace of Monroeville, Alabama, in 1936, when she was ten, inspired the narrative and characters.

Despite dealing with serious topics such as rape and racial injustice, the work is known for its warmth and comedy. Atticus Finch, the narrator’s father, has acted as a moral hero and an example of ethics for attorneys for many readers.

“In the twentieth century, the book is arguably the most widely read novel dealing with race in America, and its principal character, Atticus Finch, the most enduring literary image of racial heroism,” writes historian Joseph Crespino. The central themes of To Kill a Mockingbird, as a Southern Gothic and Bildungsroman work, are racial injustice and the loss of innocence.

The novel is extensively taught in American classrooms, with teachings emphasizing tolerance and condemning bigotry. Despite its issues, the book has been targeted for removal from public schools, using racial epithets frequently cited as a reason. The book was rated ahead of the Bible by British librarians in 2006 as one “every adult should read before they die.”

Upon its release, the novel elicited a broad range of responses. Although it has sold many copies and is widely used in teaching, its literary analysis is limited. According to author Mary McDonough Murphy, to Kill a Mockingbird is “an astounding sensation,” who compiled unique views of the novel from several authors and prominent personalities.

Director Robert Mulligan turned it into an Academy Award-winning picture in 1962, with a script by Horton Foote. A play based on the novel has been staged in Harper Lee’s hometown every year since 1990.
