Manchester United Appoint Erik ten Hag for Next Season

The English soccer side Manchester United has moved to recruit a new manager for next season, with current Ajax coach Erik ten Hag to join them for the start of the 2022/23 season.

What Has Happened?
The team from Manchester has had a difficult season and currently sits in sixth place in the English Premier League following a recent 4-0 loss to Liverpool. They started the season with former player Ole Gunnar Solskjær in charge, despite ending last season without a trophy, following the defeat by Villarreal in the UEFA Europa League Final.

Solskjær left the club last November with another former player, Michael Carrick, taking charge for a short period before Ralf Rangnick came in on an interim basis for the rest of the season. However, they’ve now announced that ten Hag has joined on a contract that runs until June 2025 and has the option of an additional year.

What Are His Chances of Success?
The success of ten Hag in Dutch football has led to hopes that he will hit the ground running next season. However, there’s a lot of work to do as Manchester United have fallen behind rivals such as Liverpool and Manchester City in the last few years, with the current season set to be their fifth in a row without a trophy.

A look at the latest outright sports betting markets from William Hill, shortly after ten Hag’s arrival was announced, shows that Manchester United are priced at odds 14/1 for a top-four position within the EPL in the 2022-23 season. In addition, odds are 1/6 that they won’t win a single trophy next season. Among the other options, the odds of ten Hag being removed from the job by Christmas 2022 are 25/1.

Former Old Trafford captain Gary Neville has suggested that the team’s fans shouldn’t expect to see any trophy wins in the new coach’s first couple of seasons and said that they’re “a million miles” away from winning the EPL trophy just now.

More About Erik ten Hag

The 52-year-old coach said that it’s a “great honour” to take charge of Manchester United, and that he’s “hugely excited” by the challenge that lies ahead. It’s expected that his current assistant at Ajax, Mitchell van der Gaag, will follow him to Old Trafford this summer.

John Murtough is the football director at United, and he pointed out that their new coach has become one of “the most exciting and successful coaches in Europe” in the last few years, thanks to the attractive, attacking football he’s overseen in Amsterdam.

Erik ten Hag enjoyed a playing career as a defender for various Dutch clubs, and started his managerial career in 2012 with Go Ahead Eagles. He guided them to promotion for the first time in almost two decades before leaving for a spell as coach of Bayern Munich II in Germany.

This was followed by a couple of seasons as head coach and sporting director of FC Utrecht, where he helped them climb to fourth spot and reach the qualifiers for the Europa League before leaving to take over at Ajax.

It was while in charge at Ajax’s Johan Cruyff Arena that ten Hag’s reputation really took off. In 2019, he stunned fans by leading his team to a memorable 4-1 win against Real Madrid in the Spanish team’s own Santiago Bernabéu Stadium, ensuring that Ajax reached the semi-final of the Champions League for the first time in over two decades.
His first trophy came in the shape of the KNVB Cup in 2019-19, with the Dutch league, the Eredivisie, coming shortly after this. By early 2002, ten Haag had become the Ajax manager to reach their first 100 wins most quickly, achieving this feat in just 128 games. We’ll need to wait until the start of next season before finding out the impact that Erik ten Hag has on his new team, and Manchester United fans are sure to spend the summer dreaming of regaining their glory days.
