Bumble reveals a new trend as single Indians are more open to choose low-key dating in India

Single Indians are being open and honest about their finances whilst dating.

When faced with financial stress and high cost of living, nearly 2 in 5 (41%) single Indians asked stated they would choose a free activity (i.e. walk in the park/beach/picnic outdoors), according to Bumble, the popular women-first dating and social networking app.

According to a recent Bumble study, nearly a third (32%) of single Indians surveyed said they would volunteer to cook supper so they wouldn’t have to go out on a date.

On an in-person date, over one-third (28%) of single Indians polled said they would split costs with their date, while 22% would like to go to a club or venue that had longer happy hours with discounted prices.

“We are frequently terrified of discussing money during dating.” There’s no harm in expressing that you’re being a little more frugal right now before going on a date. Don’t be hesitant to have the talk before settling on an in-person date, and provide an alternative if something is out of your price range. That way, you won’t get up in a situation where you’re on a date and have to pay for something you can’t afford.”

Bumble’s India Communications Director, Samarpita Samaddar, agreed.

When you’ve just started dating someone, it might be difficult to have money conversations.

However, the latest trend demonstrates that daters in India are increasingly discussing money honestly and openly – a topic that was previously taboo.

According to Bumble’s research, seven out of ten (70%) single adults polled said they would be comfortable discussing salary and financial security when dating someone.

38% of respondents say it is necessary to know about their partner’s wage and will make an effort to inquire about it during the first few months of dating, whereas nearly 3 in 10 (29%) single Indians believe it is OK to discuss salaries after a few dates.

“Being upfront about finances is critical in forming healthy and fair relationships, which is why we want to empower and encourage people on Bumble to openly share things that are important to them,”

said Samarpita Samaddar, Bumble’s India Communications Director.

Tips for budget-controlled, low-key dates:

  1. Go outside: A trip to the beach or an evening stroll is a low-key approach to get to know your date better!
  2. Visiting street food stalls: Hoping from one stall to the next while sampling a wide range of mouthwatering street cuisine can be a terrific way to bond on a low-key date.
  3. Change up your date locations: Many places are now extending happy hours and hosting live music at least once a week, so plan ahead of time and savour the benefits.
  4. Cooking at home keeps date costs down, so if you’ve been on a few dates and feel comfortable inviting your date home, get creative in the kitchen with your date to cook up some new meals together. It can be a very enjoyable date!
  5. Walking or cycling dates: This may seem obvious, but how about taking your date to a local hidden treasure you’ve been itching to share, or opt for a bicycle date

This research was commissioned by Bumble and conducted by Censuswide across India with a sample of 2000 single adults between August 12-17, 2022.
