World Heart Day : 5000 cardiologists pledge to make India aware of Sudden Cardiac Death

The Cardiological Society of India, the largest and oldest running organization with more than 5000 registered cardiologists has collaborated with SATS

A critical care society accredited by American Heart Association to launch a unique initiative on the 29th of September 2022 to make people conscious of Sudden Cardiac Death (SCD) resulting from heart attack and subsequent Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) that could save lives.

Sudden Cardiac Death occurs due to a cardiovascular cause that generally happens within an hour of the onset of the symptoms. The heart stops beating or doesn’t beat sufficiently to maintain perfusion and life.

However, understanding the situation and symptoms and implementation of CPR could save thousands of lives every year. The doctors at CSI believe an awareness about SCD and CPR is the need of the hour to make the people of the country live a better life.

Researchers find that about 50% of Sudden Cardiac Death take place due to undetected Coronary Artery Disease. India-specific studies reveal that unevaluated ischemic heart disease is one of the primary causes of SCD.

Undetected coronary artery blockages, hypertrophic cardiomyopathy and dilated cardiomyopathy, ventricular arrhythmias, baseline electric abnormalities catalyze SCD particularly in the developing nations.

However, simple investigative tests like ECG can signal risks associated with these conditions.

According to Dr Debabrata Roy, Honorary General Secretary, CSI and a Senior Consulting Interventional Cardiologist: The rising number of clinical and subclinical Coronary Artery Disease (CAD) cases in India predicts the nurturing of a large population with a vulnerable trait for SCD.

If we don’t take any precautions, an explosion in SCD numbers is only a matter of time.

The immediate focus in our country should be on primary and secondary prevention programs, wider reach of first responders, timely management of ACS patients, and compliance with evidence based medications.

The decline in the post MI mortality and SCD achieved in the developed countries can largely be attributed to adoption of these strategies.
According to Dr PS Banerjee, President, CSI and a senior cardiologist: The annual incidence of SCD in India is 53 per 1 lakh Indians; constituting 5.6% of total mortality.
Economically productive younger population are predominantly affected and this is a matter of concern. Major Heart attack,i.e.
Myocardial infarction (MI) is a major cause of SCD. Through our program Making India Heart Strong, the esteemed cardiologists of CSI will engage in awaring the public about SCD and how CPR can save a million lives.

Agenda

  • Goal 1 million
Starting from 29th of September, 2022 on the World Heart Day, the Cardiological Society of India will be reaching out to 10 lakh population across India to create awareness regarding sudden cardiac death. The activity will involve setting up of physical kiosks at educational institutions, shopping malls, housing societies, police stations and post offices to demonstrate the awareness. A virtual learning platform has also been set up to drive awareness through online mediums.
  • Hands-on CPR training
Over the next three months, the CSI will be conducting hands-on CPR training to more than 10,000 people across the four metro cities of Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata and Chennai. This will involve visiting public places particularly the educational institutes in the cities and conducting CPR training camps.
  • CPR as a life-skill
Patients collapsing from SCD give a flat two and a half minutes to be revived. If we come across anyone collapsing and know the basic symptoms, an immediate CPR is what is needed. Instead, we often start crowding the place and try waking up by a splash of water. The main agenda of this program is to ensure people are aware and cautious of SCD symptoms and can implement CPR immediately.

The association has been doing sterling work in fighting heart diseases across India through its multiple chapters. It continues to be the beacon of hope of the millions of patients with cardiac complications.
The non-profit organization has been the pioneer of research in the field of cardiac study, not just through medical integration but through technological collaboration as well.
It is working with the likes of TCS and Accenture to device artificial intelligence in detecting sudden cardiac arrests amongst the masses.
The Cardiological Society of India is an active member of the International Society & Federation of Cardiology and Asian Pacific Society of Cardiology and also SAARC society of Cardiology and jointly working with European Society of Cardiology (ESC) and American College of Cardiology (ACC).
