In the entertainment industry’s evolutionary phase, we have seen that new platforms always give fierce competition to already existing ones. It has been the case since ages; it started with the advent of television, which was soon set aside during cable television. After this, people started preferring rented movies that could be watched indoors at a minimal price, and now, for a year, the OTT platforms have been at the forefront. We can see people choosing OTT platforms over everything else due to several reasons.

There are several OTT platforms like Netflix, Hotstar, Amazon Prime, Voot, which make different movies, series, podcasts, news available to people under one roof. Diversity is the primary key of these platforms as there are movies and series of different genres available here. One has the choice to watch a movie or a series as per his mood. Portability is another reason why people tend to choose these platforms. In India, many people spend several hours traveling, and hence they need some form of entertainment while they go. At times like these, OTT platforms are easily accessible, and one can log into it through their phones. Excellent picture quality, availability of subtitles, variety in the language of audios are a few other reasons for the upliftment of OTT platforms.

Additionally, the lockdown has also aggravated the use of OTT platforms. The uncertainty of home confinement has made people binge-watch several shows and series. As it is the only mode of fun in the lockdown, people are also emotionally invested in the programs. The performers are trying their best to provide more content on such platforms by shooting series, short films, podcasts, stand up sets in their households. Demand for streaming has been so high on these platforms that it has forced them to reduce the quality of the videos all around to ease the strain on internet services.    It is said that more than 20 million people created accounts on the platforms during the three months of lockdown. One of the main motives for turning to these platforms has also been the superiority of the available content. Movies and series are built upon thought-provoking, mysterious, rare, and aesthetical concepts that deviate from the mediocrity that television provides. Along with the number of subscribers, the average age of subscribers has also increased, which again leads to an increase in number. Hence, one can say that lockdown has been blessing in disguise for OTT platform.
