Writing is a powerful craft that can create histories and solve mysteries, create stories and admire glories, create brands and hold stands, and yet, it is one art form that is rarely nurtured especially when it comes to anything that is non-literature or non-media. While journalism, film writing, and literature are recognized fields of education, most of the writers working in the gig economy today are serving the world as content developers.

On Upwork, there are over 12 million freelancers registered and a major herd is of content writers. When Contentwonk surveyed 1,308 such freelance writers, they found that only 28% of them are high earners while a majority of them (44%) are medium-level earners and 28% are low earners with no recurring work. More than half of those earning high have an experience of more than 10 years in writing. But this is the story of American writers. What about Indian writers?India provides no standard benchmark for earning from freelance writing and most writers are not even sure if they can make

a living solely through content writing. This lack of surety has created barriers to pursuing writing as a career in India. Most writers do not see it as a lucrative profession but as a side glance that can help them earn some extra. Most of them are struggling with low wages and within 5 years, the majority quit.

Pooja Dubey, the founder of Global Writers Academy has been writing professionally since 2010 and has realized that one big problem with these writers is that they lack guidance.

She says, “Our education system has programs designed to train people on hundreds of professional areas but when it comes to content writing and in fact, writing as a whole, there is no formal education available.”

So, when writers have to learn, they learn more by experience and some take online courses or short workshops to gain industry knowledge. A recent survey conducted by GWA on LinkedIn revealed that 79% of the writers have actually learned only on the job after they started taking freelancing projects.Writers in India face a lot of challenges. Here are some of them

• Lack of professional learning when starting up

• The unwillingness of the clients to pay well to the writers

• Limitations of capacities that make it difficult for them to scale up

• Resistance from families as they feel this profession won’t pay enough

And there are more but all these problems can be addressed by solving one single challenge – Lack of guidance. If only, our education system can provide a safe space for writers to learn and develop themselves, writing can become the most amazing profession one could take.

And to address this big challenge, GWA was launched, to provide training to Indian writers. The programs of the academy rest on four principles –

• Creativity is the core of writing even when learning and thus, it can only be learned in innovative ways

• The art of writing builds a foundation for writers and comprehensive knowledge is required

• A writer needs to think uniquely and thus, must be trained, not just on writing but also creative thinking skills

• Freelance content writing is not just about writing but it is also about creating a profession by working as a one-man company which is why professional skills are important to teach

GWA connects with the idea of education and leaves no stone unturned in trying to make a difference in the lives of writers and professionals through its programs. This year, in July 2020, GWA launched a Creativity Lab for writers.. This lab is a safe space for new writers to learn, explore, connect, practice, and experiment with writing in groups. The GWA Creativity Lab is the first of its kind in the world with a guided structure and has been created exclusively for writers. All sessions and projects receive personal guidance from Writer Pooja Dubey who is the lead trainer in the organization.GWA does much more than just training writers and the example of that is the MEGA learning drive that GWA has planned for the next two months starting from 29th Aug 2020 to 31st Oct 2020. The drive has 54 sessions conducted by 47 trainers on 19 days in 9 weeks.

The MEGA drive is based on the theory of multiple intelligence by Howard Gardner and the additions by Tony Buzan. During the series of these webinars, speakers would talk on a wide range of topics including learning, mind management, mind-mapping, creativity, music, sketch noting, NLP, self-development, personality, communication skills, and many more. And all the sessions come to learners at no cost!

GWA’s founder, Pooja Dubey, says to Prittle Prattle News “The world is going through a major crisis, and everyone is trying to help in their own ways and this is our attempt to help people through learning and is our gift of learning to humanity.”
