Fathers love!

Daughters and sons grasped the Eliza invitation to brag about themselves in honor of Father’s Day, regardless of the cultural or ethnic designation for father. We’re not only talking about biological fathers here. Uncles, foster fathers, and stepfathers were all lauded, with one person remarking that the term “step-dad” was unnecessary in her household. As with Mother’s Day, our Eliza readers were full of superlatives: outstanding, fantastic, terrific man, honorable, genuinely the best, hero, and even Superman. “The finest thing about him,” one daughter recalled, “was that he was my father.” Another person just stated, “My Dad rocks.” While women’s cooking and baking abilities were frequently praised, fathers in the kitchen did not receive the same effusive applause. While a couple mentioned that their father taught them how to cook, this isn’t often where fathers shine. One Eliza reader told an amusing anecdote about how her father made mac and cheese for lunch and neglected to include milk and butter! You’re not shocked to see that there are a lot of papas out there who can fix anything. They can make toys (including a merry-go-round), sing and play musical instruments, construct ice rinks and lodges, and are well-versed in woodworking, carpentry, and, yes, automobile maintenance. Many people taught the value of hard effort, honesty, respect, and responsibility. On the bright side, they have instilled in their children the importance of having a sense of humor (there are many humorous dads out there!) What was very interesting to read in these brag stories was how much fathers defied gender stereotypes. There was mention of their father joyfully walking them down the aisle. However, several females enjoy fishing, hunting, camping, playing and watching hockey, fixing their cars, and taking things apart and reassembling them because of their dad.
