Hotels Western In 1930 at the coffee shop of the Commercial Hotel in Yakima, Washington, Severt W. Thurston and Frank Dupar of Seattle met unexpectedly for breakfast. The rival hotel owners agreed to create the management firm to deal with the paralysing effects of the ongoing Great Depression. The company’s business management They persuaded the men Peter and Adolph Schmidt to join them and created Western Hotels together, who managed five hotels in the Puget Sound area. There were 17 hotels in the network, including 16 in Washington and one in Idaho.

Western hotels were extended in 1931 to Vancouver, British Columbia and Portland, Oregon, 1939 to Alaska, and in 1941 to California, taking over the direction of the Sir Francis Drake Hotel the day after the bombing of Pearl Harbor. Western had holdings in Montana and Utah in the early 1950s as well.

Edward Carlson, Executive of Western Hotels, persuaded Victor “Trader Vic” Bergeron in 1949 to launch its first Trader Vic business in Seattle, Benjamin Franklin. The Outrigger first as a modest bar and became a complete restaurant in 1954 and a Trader Vic’s in 1960. In 1960.

Due to the popularity of the restaurant, the Bergeron team has opened Trader Vic’s offices at a number of its hotels with Western Hotels.

With the acquisition of Henry J. Kaiser’s Hawaiian Village Hotel in 1956 Western moved into Hawaii.

Early management has independently developed each property. Many of its locations were incorporated into a single company structure in 1958 following almost two decades of fast expansion, aimed at bringing the hotels together under a same chain name. Western Hotels also managed 3 hotels outside of the US and Canada in Guatemala as early as 1958. The first hotel in Mexico was opened in 1961 by Western.
